Introducing WebP Wand — Our Newest Mac App

WebP Wand converts images to WebP right from Finder. Smaller files, originals untouched, free to try — now on sale for $2.99.

•By Julian Miller

We’ve been quiet on the blog since we launched it at the end of last year — and we’ve been busy. This month we’re shipping something new: WebP Wand, a Mac app that turns almost any image into WebP from Finder, in one gesture.

If you publish photos, build websites, or just email large PNGs and JPEGs, you already know the problem. WebP is widely supported, often half the file size, and for most photos the visual difference is imperceptible. Google puts more love on sites that are lighter and graphics are easily the heaviest contributor to slowing down a site. WebP is a piece of the solution particularly if you have a lot of graphics. There are a lot of utilities to convert files but not are this handy, fast, easy to use and, I have to say, fun. The catch has always been the extra steps: export, convert, rename, hope you didn’t overwrite the original.

WebP Wand removes those steps.

What it does

Select one image or a whole folder in Finder. Quick Actions → WebP Wand. A .webp file appears beside each original. That’s it.

WebP Wand accepts JPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, GIF, BMP, and SVG. Conversions run locally on your Mac and finish in moments — even on batches.

Your originals stay safe

This matters to us, so we’ll say it plainly:

WebP Wand never touches an original image. It only creates copies in another format. Your source files are never changed or altered in any way.

We built it that way on purpose. You should be able to experiment freely.

Try it free, then unlock

Download WebP Wand free from our site. In trial mode, each converted image carries a small watermark — “Created with WebP Wand.” — so you can test on your own files before buying.

When you’re ready, purchase unlocks the watermark (or lets you replace it with your own credit line in the corner). WebP Wand is on sale for $2.99 for a short time; regular price is $4.99. One-time purchase through Lemon Squeezy — no subscription.

A wand for practical work

As we say on the apps page, some may think a tool like this belongs in the quiver of a hedge wizard — a village enchanter’s gadget for a simple task. They would be wrong. It does a simple task simply, easily, and speedily. Practical magic for lighter pages and faster sites.

We ran lots of conversions during testing: a 2.1 MB PNG became a 1.2 MB WebP — smaller on disk, same look to the eye, ready to upload. You can test just download and it will work. Test a bunch of photos/images that you have to see how it works for you.

Where to go from here

If WebP Wand proves useful, take a look at PhotoShrinkr too — another Finder wand from Plum Amazing, focused on batch compression across many formats.

Thank you for being part of the Plum Amazing community. More news soon — we’ve got catching up to do on this blog.
